While the opposition possesses 89 members in the National Assembly, the government claims 237 votes for the 27th amendment.

The National Assembly now has 336 seats, 10 of which are empty, making its effective strength 326 members as the administration continues its efforts to have the 27th Constitutional Amendment passed by Parliament.

At least 224 members must endorse the amendment in order for it to be adopted. Currently, 237 lawmakers support the ruling coalition, which includes the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), guaranteeing a strong majority.

Parliamentary figures show that the largest party in the ruling alliance, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has 125 members. The PPP has 74 members, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has 22, the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) has 5, and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) has 4.

The government has also received support from four independent members, one member each of the National Party, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), and Pakistan Muslim League-Zia.

Ten members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and 75 independents make up the opposition benches, which have 89 members. There is one opponent from each of the Sunni Ittehad Council, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.

In order to shape the government’s approach before the vote, the PPP is likely to finalize its official position at a meeting of its Central Executive Committee tomorrow.
