Resolutions on nuclear security and arms control led by Pakistan are passed by a UN body.

According to an official release, Pakistan sponsored four resolutions on Saturday that were accepted by the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the UN General Assembly. These resolutions included measures on nuclear security assurances, confidence-building, and regional disarmament. Two of the committee’s resolutions, named “Regional disarmament” and “Confidence-building measures in the regional and sub-regional contexts,” were unanimously adopted, according to a statement from Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN. The vast majority of member states ratified the other two resolutions, which were titled “Conclusion of effective international arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons” and “Conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels.” According to the statement, “Pakistan has led UN initiatives for decades to advance priority issues of nuclear disarmament, regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and confidence-building measures.” Referring to commitments made by nuclear-armed states not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear nations, the statement continued, “The adoption of these resolutions reaffirms the importance of the international community’s priority on ‘negative security assurances’ as well as embracing regional approaches to disarmament and arms control.”
