When did Faiz Hameed initially gain prominence?

Faiz Hameed, the former chief of the ISI, gained significant attention during the 2017 Faizabad sit-in, when it was reported that he facilitated negotiations between the government and the then-banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

On November 27, 2017, the written accord between the government and the proscribed TLP closed with the phrase: “Through the facilitation of Major General Faiz Hameed.”

Subsequent to the 2018 general elections, the PTI administration designated Faiz Hameed as Director General of the ISI in 2019, a role he maintained for nearly two years.

Accusations of political meddling

Subsequently, in its ruling about the Faizabad sit-in, the Supreme Court mandated stringent measures against the officials implicated in the incident. Faiz Hameed was additionally charged with breaching his oath and meddling in political affairs during this time. Allegations of political victimization, detentions, and orchestrated changes in political allegiances also surfaced during that period.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made grave allegations against him in several addresses, while claims of political influence persisted under Lt Gen (R) Faiz Hameed’s term.
