Everywhere in the country, Shab-e-Meraj is celebrated with religious fervor.

On Friday night, Shab-e-Meraj was celebrated nationwide with intense religious zeal, reverence, and devotion. Since the Holy Prophet (PBUH) ascended to the highest echelons of heaven on Shab-e-Meraj, Muslims consider it a sacred night.

Following Isha, the faithful flocked to mosques in large numbers to give special prayers that lasted until Fajr. The significance of the night and its benefits were emphasized by religious academics in their sermons. They also emphasized the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings and other facets of his life.

In addition to mosques, colorful buntings were used to adorn homes and streets. Women prayed at home during the night.

Every year on the 27th of Rajab (the Islamic calendar), Muslims celebrate Shab-e-Meraj, the night the Holy Prophet (PBUH) set out on a unique journey to see Allah Almighty by riding the celestial “al-Buraq” across seven sky.

The Arabic term Urooj, which implies height or ascent, is the source of the word Meraj. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) was also instructed to offer five daily prayers (Salat) during Meraj.
