Rain occurs in Lahore whereas northern Pakistan experiences snowfall.

Lahore and the plains of Pakistan are undergoing substantial rainfall, although snowfall persists in the northern mountainous areas of the nation.

Precipitation was observed in Abbott Road, Lakshmi, Gawalmandi, Johar Town, Jail Road, and adjacent regions of Lahore. Light precipitation has been recorded at Shadman, Awan-e-Sanat-o-Tijarat Road, Qurtaba Chowk, Township, Bagrian, and Green Town. The weather persists as overcast with vigorous winds traversing the city.

Electrical outages

The precipitation has impacted the city’s electrical infrastructure, resulting in more than 150 feeders operated by LESCO tripping owing to the moist circumstances. Numerous regions have seen power outages, resulting in annoyance for inhabitants. LESCO has put all field personnel on high alert to swiftly restore supply and rectify technical issues.

Highway conditions

Syed Imran Ahmed, spokesperson for the Central Region, reported minor precipitation along the Lahore-Islamabad M2 Motorway, Pindi Bhattian-Multan M4, and M5 Motorway from Multan to Rahim Yar Khan. Precipitation was also documented along the Lahore-Sialkot M11 Motorway. He recommended that drivers decrease speed, maintain a safe distance, activate headlights, and refrain from abrupt braking when navigating wet roads.

Precipitation and snowfall throughout Pakistan

Northern Pakistan and Azad Kashmir are seeing snowfall, accompanied by a notable decrease in temperatures. In Balochistan, regions like Ziarat, Kan Mehtarzai, Muslim Bagh, Toba Kakri, and Toba Achakzai had snowfall, with Quetta documenting a minimum temperature of -1°C, while Kodraktop and Khawaja Imran recorded -3°C. The National Highway Authority and PDMA are persistently removing snow from highways.

In Azad Kashmir, elevated areas experienced little snowfall, whilst lower valleys observed a significant decrease in temperatures.

In Karachi, rainfall coupled with strong winds provided respite from the heat, impacting regions including as Surjani Town, Saddar, Garden, Gul Plaza, Mauripur, New Nazimabad, Ahsanabad, Gadani, Hub Chowki, Gulshan-e-Mimar, Nagan Chowrangi, and Gulistan-e-Johar.

Peshawar and adjacent districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have had rains, with snowfall recorded in Upper and Lower South Waziristan, North Waziristan, and mountainous regions. The PDMA cautioned that the precipitation and snowfall event may escalate, advising citizens to adhere to safety protocols.

The Meteorological Department predicts sporadic rain and snowfall in the upper regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until 23 January, with Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Bajaur, Malakand, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Kohistan, Kolai-Palas, Batgram, Torghar, Mansehra, and Abbottabad expected to receive precipitation and snow at higher altitudes.
