The Prime Minister convenes a crucial meeting regarding the construction of new canals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a significant meeting today (Thursday) to address the canal issue.

The meeting, headed by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, will discuss the canal issue in accordance with the Council of Common Interests (CCI) resolution. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will participate in the meeting.

According to sources, officials from the Ministry of Water Resources will attend the forthcoming meeting about the canal matter. The Federal Minister for Planning, the Minister for Economic Affairs, and the Attorney General have received invitations as well.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has articulated significant concerns on the matter of new canals. Last year, under the Prime Minister’s supervision, the CCI suspended canal development. The federal administration has resolved not to construct any new canal without unanimity.

At that time, it was determined that no new canals would be built without mutual consent via the CCI, and that the federal government would refrain from proceeding until a consensus among the provinces was reached.

The six strategically significant canals are the Thar Canal, Rainee Canal, Cholistan Canal, Greater Thar Canal, Kachhi Canal, and Chashma Right Bank Canal. The President was informed of the necessity for the concurrent building of these canals.

The establishment of these canals was deemed crucial for enhancing the nation’s food security and fostering agricultural advancement.
