PMDC mandates an investigation report following the purported suicide of a FJMU student in Lahore.

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Thursday acknowledged the purported suicide of a medical student at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) in Lahore and requested a comprehensive report from the university.

The tragedy transpired on Tuesday night when a 22-year-old female student, hailing from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly perished after leaping from the fourth storey of a university hostel. She was living in the government hostel at FJMU.

In a formal correspondence to the university principal, the PMDC registrar characterized the issue as exceedingly grave, emphasizing its possible repercussions on the broader student populace. The council mandated the university to provide a factual report of the occurrence within seven days.

The PMDC solicited details concerning the documented circumstances by the institution, the formation of any inquiry or fact-finding committee, its composition and mandate, together with any preliminary conclusions and the anticipated timeline for the investigation’s conclusion.

The council requested information regarding initiatives aimed at enhancing hostel safety and bolstering mental health support services for students.

The PMDC underscored the vital role of medical and dentistry students in shaping Pakistan’s future healthcare workforce, highlighting the pressing necessity for robust student support systems. It recommended that all medical and dental colleges employ experienced counselors and psychologists to offer prompt guidance and support to students experiencing psychological discomfort.

The PMDC additionally advocated for confidential counseling services and enhanced monitoring of student welfare, specifically for indicators of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout.

This development arises amidst increasing apprehension regarding analogous incidents lately reported at universities in Lahore, underscoring the necessity of proactive mental health care inside educational institutions.
