Conflicts between demonstrators and police officers outside Karachi’s US Consulate on Mai Kolachi Road on Sunday resulted in at least seven fatalities and twelve injuries.
Following rumors of Israeli airstrikes and the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the United States, protests erupted in several parts of Karachi on Sunday.
The US Consulate was the scene of a protest by irate demonstrators, some of whom attacked the building, damaged property, and set fire to some of the property.
Large crowds were observed at strategic sites, such as Numaish Chowrangi, Abbas Town, and the Tower area, amid reports of tensions in many sections of the city.
Chanting slogans against the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, protesters marched through the streets.
Later, according to witnesses, protesters advanced on the US Consulate, where security had been increased.
In addition to unverified accusations of shooting, several demonstrators allegedly flung stones.
According to police officials, more officers have been sent in to maintain order and that efforts are being made to disperse the masses.
Authorities said the situation was being closely watched and asked people to maintain their composure and refrain from spreading or responding to rumors.
