Pakistan denounces the life sentence given to Kashmiri leader Aasiya Andrabi by an Indian court.

Aasiya Andrabi, a well-known Kashmiri political figure, was given a life sentence by a Delhi court on Wednesday. Her two associates, Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen, were also given harsh 30-year prison terms under the harsh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Pakistan categorically rejected these decisions.

According to a statement from the Foreign Office, the decision represents a serious injustice and the ongoing repression of fundamental rights in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Pakistan sees this ruling as a part of a larger trend of politically motivated indictments meant to intimidate and silence individuals who support the rightful rights of the Kashmiri people. Serious questions about due process, judicial independence, and compliance with international human rights commitments are raised by the sentence.

Aasiya Andrabi has been an outspoken supporter of the Kashmir cause for a long time. Her conviction and severe punishment highlight IIOJK’s diminishing room for civil liberties and political speech.

According to the FO, Pakistan felt that such acts worsened tensions and jeopardized South Asia’s chances for peace and stability.

Pakistan called on the international community to hold India responsible for its activities in IIOJK and to take prompt note of this development, especially the United Nations and international human rights organizations.

It demanded that the Kashmiri people’s political, social, and human rights—including their right to free speech and a fair trial—be upheld.

The statement stated, “Pakistan reiterates its unwavering support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for self-determination, as enshrined in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.”
