Senate ticket rift grips PTI

Nearly a dozen members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have entered the race in a full-fledged internal dispute over the party’s one Senate seat in the forthcoming by-election.

Applications for the party ticket have already been received, and vigorous campaigning has started on social media and within the party. In an effort to sway the outcome, provincial ministers have also entered the race and publicly supported their favored candidates.

The PTI’s Senator-elect was disqualified before taking the oath of office, creating a vacancy and what many insiders refer to as a “civil war” inside the party for the esteemed position. Workers and leaders are vehemently debating who should get the ticket in the campaign, which has spurred intense discussions on social media.

A number of notable individuals, including former provincial minister Shaukat Yousafzai, Peshawar District President Irfan Saleem, Faizur Rehman, Salarzai, Sajjad Bangash, Rasool Gul, Rahmat Kundi, and several more, have reportedly applied for the ticket, according to PTI sources.

Senior party leaders have also started a verbal sparring match. The ticket should go to a candidate who has made major sacrifices for the party and for the release of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, according to a number of workers and mid-level leaders.

Some cabinet members have publicly endorsed Faizur Rehman, while some prominent politicians are supporting Peshawar District President Irfan Saleem. Aftab Alam, the minister of law, has openly supported Faizur Rehman.

Social media posts threatening to start protests inside the party if the ticket is awarded to a “ATM candidate” are spreading since the situation has become so heated.

PTI has established a parliamentary board led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to address the issue. The official candidate for the Senate by-election will be chosen by the board.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has scheduled the filing of nomination papers for April 6 and 7. According to PTI sources, prospective candidates will submit their nomination papers over the course of these two days, and one day prior to the deadline for withdrawing nominations, the parliamentary board is anticipated to make its final decision.

The parliamentary board has already been established to choose the nominee, PTI Provincial Information Secretary Malik Adeel told reporters.Since PTI is a democratic party, anyone can declare their interest for the ticket. Unlike other parties, decisions are not imposed here,” he stated. “The board is gathering applications. Imran Khan, the founder’s chairman, will make the final choice if they meet. The parliamentary board will decide otherwise.

In the run-up to the Senate by-election, PTI is under increasing internal pressure to strike a balance between political pragmatism, sacrifice, and loyalty.
