Nepra abolishes licensing mandate for solar customers up to 25 kW.

Solar consumers in Pakistan have attained considerable regulatory relief, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has eliminated the necessity of acquiring a licence for net metering systems up to 25 kilowatts.
The decision is anticipated to streamline processes for families and small enterprises implementing renewable energy solutions. The decision arises from increasing demand for solar energy due to escalating electricity rates and a rising customer inclination towards alternate energy sources.
The advancement occurs subsequent to an official solicitation from the Power Division, which responded to the explicit directive of Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari. The government requested Nepra’s authorisation to abolish the license requirement for solar customers operating systems of 25kW or less under net metering agreements. Officials contended that the current regulation imposed superfluous administrative obstacles for small-scale users, hindering broader adoption of solar technology.
NEPRA has officially sanctioned the plan, thereby eliminating the licensing requirement for consumers in this category. The ruling pertains mainly to net metering users who install solar systems with a capacity of 25 kilowatts or less, mostly consisting of home consumers, small commercial entities, and community-level installations. Upon approval, such users will be exempt from the previously required licensing process dictated by regulatory requirements.
