In response to Trump’s tariffs, China starts looking at how the US does business.

On Friday, China started two investigations into how the US does business. This shows that China is determined to fight back against President Donald Trump’s tariffs before he visits in May.
The Commerce Ministry said the additional probes are a response to Trump’s announcement earlier this month that he will be investigating other countries, including China.
The ministry stated that the two Chinese investigations were started to protect the interests of Chinese industry and that they were “firmly opposed” to the American probes.
One will look at U.S. rules that make it hard for Chinese goods to get into the U.S. and that make it hard for the U.S. to send advanced technology products to China. The other one looks at things that make it hard for China to export green energy.
The ministry indicated that the probes should take six months, but they could be extended for additional three months if needed.
The Chinese inquiries are the most recent move in a long-running trade dispute and might be used as leverage against any new tariffs the U.S. might impose.
The U.S. Supreme Court threw out some of Trump’s earlier tariffs, and in response, he started what are known as Section 301 trade investigations.
One of those investigations is looking into claims of too much industrial capacity, which can lead to more exports, and government subsidies that could provide companies in China and other countries an unfair edge over U.S. companies.
The investigation, which is aimed at 16 trading partners, including the European Union, could mean that goods from those countries will have to pay higher duties.
The other probe, which looks at many nations, including China, might stop the import of goods created by forced labor.
At recent discussions in Paris, China’s trade negotiator told the U.S. that the investigations might put the hard-won stability in commercial relations between the two countries at risk.
The talks were expected to set the stage for Trump’s trip to Beijing, which was supposed to happen next week. The president of the United States has put off the trip because of the war in Iran.
