Iran permits ships that are not hostile to pass through the Hormuz Strait

Iran emphasizes that these ships would be permitted “safe passage.”

Iran has declared that “non-hostile” ships can still cross the vital Strait of Hormuz despite growing tensions in the area.

The statement was delivered to important UN authorities at a time when the continuous violence is interfering with the world’s energy supply.

Iran notified the International Maritime Organization and the United Nations Security Council that some ships might pass through the strait without incident.

Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, was also informed of the communication.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s letter states that ships can cross the Strait of Hormuz if they:

Refrain from taking part in or endorsing acts against Iran.
Observe all safety and security regulations in Iran.
Work along with Iranian authorities
Iran stressed that in certain circumstances, such ships would be permitted “safe passage.”

Limitations on specific vessels

Iran made it clear that ships connected to Israel or the United States would not be eligible.

Innocent or non-hostile transit would be prohibited for ships, equipment, or assets connected to what Iran referred to as “aggressors.”

One of the most important maritime lanes in the world is still the Strait of Hormuz.

Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies have been badly affected as a result of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli dispute with Iran.

The note was distributed to the 176 member states of the London-based IMO after being delivered to the 15-member Security Council on Sunday.

The paper was formally distributed to maritime stakeholders on Tuesday, according to the Financial Times.

Iran claimed to have taken “necessary and proportionate measures” to stop hostile operations from using the Strait of Hormuz.

In light of growing geopolitical tensions, the action indicates more stringent supervision over maritime traffic in the area.
