President Asif Ali Zardari, speaking on the occasion of World Zero Waste Day, referred to the issue of food waste as a severe national problem and underlined the necessity of making the reduction of food waste a realistic priority at all points in time.
Food waste is a significant problem that is tied to the day-to-day life of ordinary residents, according to President Zardari, who noted that this year’s World Zero Waste Day will center on the topic of food destruction.
It was brought to his attention that the deterioration of food before it reaches the market and the loss of crops as a result of inadequate storage are significant concerns that demand quick response.
It was brought to the attention of the President that the behavior of throwing away leftover food at gatherings is not only a waste of resources but also a waste of water, land, and energy. The disposal of food in landfills plays a role in the contamination of the environment and is associated with the phenomenon of climate change.
He stated that Pakistan, which primarily an agricultural economy, needs to implement a number of initiatives to strengthen its cold chain and storage systems, as well as reduce post-harvest losses.
Moreover, he emphasized the importance of giving surplus food to those who are in need, establishing concrete examples through the institutions of the government, and encouraging enterprises to adopt responsible planning behaviors.
At the household level, President Zardari urged the general public to exercise caution when making purchases and to store their belongings in the appropriate manner.
He stressed that eliminating food waste is a national obligation that involves everyone and has the potential to improve food security while also lowering the amount of strain placed on the environment.
