The Lahore High Court has issued notifications regarding a case challenging the Punjab Local Government Act of 2025.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sent notifications to the Punjab government, the Secretary of Local Government, and other parties in response to a petition submitted by the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly contesting various provisions of the Punjab Local Government Act 2025.

Justice Sultan Tanvir presided over the petition submitted by Mueen Raza Qureshi and others, represented by Barrister Abuzar Salman Khan Niazi.

The petitioner’s counsel contended that empowering the bureaucracy under the Local Government Act 2025 contravenes Article 140A of the Constitution, which requires the devolution of authority to elected representatives.

He additionally argued that non-party-based local elections contravene Article 17 of the Constitution, which ensures citizens’ freedom of association and political affiliation. The attorney contended that prohibiting candidates from disclosing their political party affiliation before to elections is unlawful, as political affiliation constitutes a fundamental constitutional right.

The attorney argued that the Local Government Act 2025 is inconsistent with the principles of popular representation and urged the court to annul Sections 25, 32, 35, 40, and 55 of the Act.
