The schedule for the AJK elections will be announced in May, according to the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Azad Kashmir announced that the calendar for the 2026 elections will be published in May.

A senior meeting convened under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal to discuss preparations for the 2026 Azad Kashmir general elections, during which consultations with political parties took place.

Ghulam Mustafa stated that the timetable for the 2026 elections will be announced in May. The forthcoming elections will be conducted punctually and under the oversight of the Pakistan Army. Thorough evaluation was conducted on recommendations aimed at ensuring the electoral process is transparent, equitable, and unbiased.

During the meeting, Election Commission Member Syed Nazir Gilani stated that there was a consensus to compile voter lists promptly and enhance polling station amenities. The integration of the electoral roll with the Nadra database has been finalized, and those who have attained the age of 18 will be automatically registered on the voter list.

He stated that modifications to the identity card will be automatically transmitted to the Election Commission from the Nadra system. Political parties were requested to disseminate the Election Commission’s directives via social media. Special measures will be made to assist electors from refugee Jammu and Kashmir.

On this occasion, political parties advocated the activation of Nadra mobile vans in Azad Kashmir, the acceleration of public registration, and the compilation of voter lists at the ward level.

The meeting conveyed apprehension regarding the decrease in voter turnout in certain union councils, suggested strategies to enhance security measures, underscored the necessity for a clear and effective code of conduct, and concurred on the importance of ensuring the accuracy of voter lists in refugee constituencies.

Political leaders additionally suggested the deployment of armed forces in refugee constituencies. A proposal to implement manual verification procedures for electoral transparency is now being evaluated.

The meeting also addressed enhancements to the voting procedure for 12 refugee seats.
