Today is the shortest day and longest night in Pakistan, just like in other regions of the world.

On Sunday (today), Pakistan will experience the year’s shortest day and longest night.

The day will last roughly 10 hours and 10 minutes in Lahore and its suburbs, and the night will last 13 hours and 50 minutes; in other cities, the variation might be a few minutes.

December 21 is the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes Pakistan.

How to observe the longest night and shortest day of the Winter Solstice

An astronomical event known as the Winter Solstice designates the longest night and the shortest day of the year.

It happens twice in each hemisphere at the height of winter and summer, when one of the earth’s poles is at its greatest tilt away from the sun.

The earth’s tilted axis is the cause of the seasons, the solstices, and the variations in daylight hours throughout the year.

Throughout the year, the sun moves in a sine wave across the sky, occasionally moving further north or farther south. The Winter Solstice happens on and around December 21st when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn and at a latitude of 23.5° south.

After moving steadily since last June, the sun “stops” for around three days at its furthest southerly point before beginning to gently creep back north once more.

The Solstice reaches its zenith during this period. This will take place on Sunday, December 21st, 2025.
