Today, the Senate will hear a bill to amend the Army Act.

Today (Friday), the Senate is scheduled to hear the Army Act Amendment Bill in order to formally approve it.
The Army Act Amendment Bill will be presented in the upper house by Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, according the agenda for today’s meeting. In addition, he would submit for approval the Pakistan Navy Ordinance Amendment Bill and the Pakistan Air Force Act Amendment Bill.
The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill will also be presented to the Senate for approval by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
The National Assembly had approved these bills the day before. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif used the opportunity to thank all coalition partners for their cooperation and for facilitating the legislation’s passage.
It is important to remember that the Army Act 2025 has already been passed by the National Assembly after the 27th Constitutional Amendment was approved. In accordance with this new law, the Army Chief’s term will begin when a new notification designating him as the Chief of Defense Forces is issued.
The Chief of Defence Forces would supervise the reorganization and unification of all Pakistan Army branches, according to the new law. Additionally, the Commander National Strategic Command will be appointed by the Prime Minister based on the Chief of Defense Forces’ nomination.
The Commander National Strategic Command will have a three-year term with the possibility of a three-year extension, per the new Act. Additionally, the law states that as on November 27, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee position will no longer exist.
