Trump’s threat of tariffs over Greenland prompts the EU to warn of a downward spiral.

Leaders of the European Union issued a “dangerous downward spiral” warning on Saturday in response to US President Donald Trump’s promise to impose higher tariffs on European allies until the US is permitted to purchase Greenland.
“Tariffs would jeopardise a risky downward spiral and damage transatlantic relations. In posts on X, EU Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe would continue to be unified, coordinated, and dedicated to preserving its sovereignty.
Tariffs, according to Kaja Kallas, the top diplomat for the group, would harm economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic and divert attention from the EU’s “core task” of putting an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“Russia and China must be having a blast. Kallas claimed on X that it is they who gain from rifts among allies.
“Tariffs jeopardise our common prosperity and run the risk of making Europe and the US poorer. We can handle this within NATO if Greenland’s security is at jeopardy.”
On Sunday, ambassadors from the 27 member states of the European Union will meet urgently to discuss how they will respond to the threat of tariffs.
