PMD Warns of Rising Smog, Fog Across Plains

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has said that smog and fog are likely to stay and even increase in many of the country’s plain areas over the next few days, mainly because the dry spell isn’t ending anytime soon.

In its advisory, the Met Office noted that visibility will remain poor, especially early in the morning, across a wide stretch of Punjab. Cities expected to be affected include Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Jhelum, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Multan, Khanewal, Layyah, Kot Addu and Bahawalpur.

A similar pattern is expected in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—including Peshawar, Swabi, Mardan and Dera Ismail Khan—as well as in upper Sindh, particularly Sukkur and Rohri.

The PMD warned that worsening smog and fog could slow down transport and further degrade air quality, which may create problems for people with breathing issues and other sensitive groups. Travelers have been asked to be cautious and avoid unnecessary risks during low-visibility hours.

Officials also advised the public to follow updates through the PMD website and the Pak Weather app for daily forecasts and alerts.
