Fazl discusses the 27th Constitutional Amendment with President Zardari.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), met with President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), at Bilawal House in Karachi on Saturday.

PPP sources claim that the JUI-F leader and a delegation arrived at Bilawal House to talk over issues pertaining to the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.

Fazlur Rehman was attended to the meeting by Maulana Rashid Soomro, Mufti Ibrar Ahmed, and other party members.

According to sources, the leaders also discussed developments regarding the 27th Amendment and the nation’s general political climate.

Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani submitted the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice for a thorough examination after it was formally introduced in the Senate earlier in the day.

The Senate has tabled the 27th Amendment Bill despite the opposition’s concerns.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the measure at the Senate session and suggested pausing regular business to allow for its introduction; the chair granted this move.

A joint parliamentary committee made up of representatives from the National Assembly and the Senate will now review the bill, Tarar said, stressing that no vote would be held right away and that opposition input would be gathered before proceeding.

Chairman Gilani confirmed that the bill had been officially referred to the Law and Justice Committee and invited opposition legislators to actively participate in committee talks.
