International leaders in Pakistan: A diplomatic synopsis for 2025

2025 turned out to be a crucial year for Pakistan’s diplomatic relations, as nine foreign leaders paid visits that improved regional and bilateral relations.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made the first high-profile visit on February 12–13, with an emphasis on energy cooperation, trade, and investment. In addition to taking a united stand on regional issues like the Palestine conflict, Pakistan and Turkey signed 24 agreements and memoranda of understanding during the visit, including initiatives in defence production and military cooperation.

During his April 20–21 visit, UAE Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke about regional trends, bilateral relations, and economic cooperation, particularly joint ventures for investment and labour.

During his August 2–3 visit to Pakistan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasised regional cooperation and pledged to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion. Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of Iran, came earlier in May to talk about diplomatic cooperation and border security. A fruitful year for Pakistan-Iran relations was marked later in November when Dr. Ardeshir Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, paid a visit for high-level discussions.

Murat Nurtileu, the deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of Malaysia, Radoslaw Sikorski, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Poland, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Prabowo Subianto, the president of Indonesia, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates, were among the other notable visitors.

Together, these trips promoted collaboration in the areas of technology, trade, investment, defence, education, health, and regional security. As a result, 2025 marks a significant turning point for Pakistan, demonstrating increased international trust and strategic involvement on several fronts.
