PM pledges parliamentary supremacy on World Democracy Day

Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, stated that the country was fully determined in upholding the core principles of democracy including equality, justice, and freedom during the observance of International Day of Democracy along with the rest of the international community.

On this day, the prime minister made remarks in which he stated that this was an excellent occasion for reiterating the nation’s determination for ensuring the will of the people, protecting human dignity, and ensuring the rule of law.

The prime minister stated that in a democracy, power is exercised by the representatives elected by the people for the betterment of the latter, and mentioned that the Parliament is the key institution of the democratic process in the country that represents the will of the people.

In addition, the prime minister stated that the constitution of Pakistan was the legal instrument that defined the relations between the state and its citizens. Moreover, Article 25 of the Constitution ensured the equal rights of the citizens and equality before the law, in addition to establishing the role of the federating units in addition to defining the constitutional status of national institutions and frameworks of governance.

According to PM Shehbaz Sharif, “the parliamentary democratic system of Pakistan’s federal structure has bestowed upon parliament the duty to enact laws in keeping with the interests of the public and Islam.”

He stated that one of the basic duties of parliament is to frame the laws according to the wishes of the citizens and the needs of the current age.

According to the prime minister, “it is necessary to stay firm on the values of democracy which are the base of the welfare of the citizens to meet the challenges of the current age and ensure the prosperity of the future.”

He said that according to the constitution, the state was committed to giving full participation of women in all fields of life. He pointed out that women were provided reserved seats in the federal and provincial parliaments to give them proper representation.
