PM promises to rescind the contentious IRSA appointment: Shoro

Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro has said that the prime minister has noticed Sindh’s apprehensions with regard to the IRSA top slot appoint and contacted Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

The PM has assured withdrawal of the notification of controversial appointment of Zafar Mahmood as Chairman IRSA, minister said.

Chief Minister Shah argued with the PM that the Council of Common Interest (CCI) had decided that the chairman of the river authority will be appointed on rotation from the members of the provinces.

According to Jam Khan Shoro, the prime minister agreed with Sindh’s position on the chairman of the Indus Rivers System Authority nomination.

It should be noted that the Sindh government recently appointed Zafar Mahmood, a well-known supporter of the contentious Kalabagh Dam, as Chairman of the IRSA. The cabinet voiced their disapproval of this nomination during their meeting on Wednesday.

After the IRSA nomination received harsh criticism in Sindh, the leaders of the ruling PPP made the decision to ask the federal government to reevaluate it.

Prior to this, PM Shehbaz Sharif gave his approval for Zafar Mehmood to take over as the IRSA’s new chairman, effective immediately and serving a three-year term as per the IRSA ordinance that was issued to reorganize the organization.
