‘Punjab implements Section 144 in Muharram, major security curbs introduced’

– The Punjab Home Department has imposed section 144 across the province during Muharram to beef up security arrangements and preserve law and order.

According to an official statement, the limitations will stay enforced from June 17 to 26 (1st to 10th Muharram) and seven categories of activity would remain banned during this period.

According to the announcement only legally approved religious processions and gatherings will be allowed during Muharram and no new procession, gathering or religious activity will be allowed.

The public display of firearms and explosive materials at public places has been prohibited under Section 144 without prior approval of the concerned authorities. Authorities have also banned aggressive slogans, gestures, speeches and anything that can fuel sectarian tensions or hurt religious sensitivities.

The ruling also prohibits the publication of materials or speeches inciting sectarian, ethnic or religious hate.

For security reasons, homeowners living along the route of the parade will not be allowed to set up observation posts or to stockpile stones, bricks, bottles or other objects on rooftops. Spectators are also barred from congregating on rooftops and shop platforms on the procession routes.

The Home Department has declared a ban on pillion riding but it will be in force just on 9th and 10th Muharram. However women, senior citizens and law enforcement officers would be exempted from the prohibition.

Officials said the notification has been duly issued and all the concerned departments have been asked to create awareness among the masses and strictly implement the security measures across the province.
