Punjab issued a heat advisory as temperatures could reach 52°C.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has disseminated a province-wide alert regarding a significant increase in temperatures throughout Punjab, with officials advising that the forthcoming weeks may experience severe heat conditions.

PDMA Director General Umar Javed anticipates that May and June would be the hottest months of the year, with temperatures in southern Punjab perhaps soaring to 52°C. He observed that typical temperatures during this period are expected to persist between 43°C and 45°C, while previous days have already registered values 2 to 4 degrees above the norm.

The signal indicates the probability of a mild heatwave impacting southern districts from 29 April to 3 May. The northern regions of the province are anticipated to see meteorological alterations owing to a system of westerly winds. These circumstances are anticipated to affect the region from the night of 27 April until 29 April, then again from 3 to 5 May.

Officials noted that the western weather system may result in a little decline in temperatures in upper Punjab, with a projected dip of 2 to 4 degrees. Nonetheless, the overarching pattern indicates persistently elevated temperatures throughout the majority of the province.

The PDMA has emphasised increased vigilance, especially for children, women, and the elderly, who are deemed most susceptible to high heat. Citizens are urged to minimise excessive exposure to direct sunlight, maintain hydration, and implement preventive measures during peak daytime hours.

Farmers have been instructed to adapt agricultural operations to evolving weather conditions, safeguarding crops from heat stress and water scarcity. Officials underscored the significance of prompt irrigation and agricultural management to mitigate possible losses.

All pertinent departments have been notified, with directives to ensure continuous personnel at District Emergency Operation Centres. Emergency services, including Rescue 1122, have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance and guarantee prompt response to heat-related events.

The motorway police are responsible for issuing traffic advisories and aiding motorists during severe weather conditions. In crises, individuals are recommended to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 for assistance.
