Punjab to start e-bike rental service with 10,000 bikes

- The Punjab government has decided to launch an electric bike rental service for the first time in a bid to promote the eco-friendly and modern transport amenities across the state.
The first phase of the project will see 10,000 electric bikes in operation and 300 docking and charging stations set up across the city to support the service.
Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) would offer land for docking and charging facilities. The move is aimed at improving connectivity and allowing inhabitants to conveniently commute between key residential and business areas and public transit nodes in the vicinity.
The project is projected to cut thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions every year in Lahore and assist authorities combat air pollution and haze in the province capital, officials said.
The project will be executed in partnership with Lahore Parking Company (LePark), Transport Department, Safe City, and other relevant institutions. “It will be a modern, affordable transport option for students, office workers and the general public.
Citizens will be able to rent electric bikes through a mobile app and the service will be easy to access for everyday commuting needs.
The Secretary Housing said the e-bike service will greatly reduce the traffic congestion, fuel costs and environmental pollution. He said the government is taking innovative steps to prevent smog and to improve environmental conditions in the province.
