Senate polls: PTI and PML-N divisions over ticket allocation

Disagreements inside the party prompted the senior PML-N members to bring up the topic of ticket allocation with party chief Nawaz Sharif, according to sources.

According to those with knowledge of the situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wants to provide tickets to ministers and a select group of technocrats, while other people believe that people who supported the party during its crises should get tickets.

Conversely, reports stated that PTI members’ disagreements over the senate race surfaced following the prohibition on seeing PTI founder Imran Khan while he was detained in Adiala Jail.

According to party insiders, the political committee supports the senior head of the party in the senate election, whereas the legal committee wants attorneys to be chosen as PTI senators.

It is important to note that the Pakistani Election Commission (ECP) declared that voting for 48 Senate seats will take place on April 2nd of the next month.

Elections on the four seats set aside for the former tribal territories will not take place, according to the electoral monitor. As per the 25th Amendment of the Constitution, these seats were eliminated at the merging of tribal territories into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The ECP reports that seven general seats, two women’s seats, two technocrat seats, and one minority seat in Punjab would be up for election in the Senate.

It also stated that while polling will only cover 11 seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, elections in Sindh will also be held on 12 seats in the same category.
