With the approval of the legislation, the Army chief will serve as the Chief of Defense Forces for five years.

Following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the National Assembly adopted the 2025 Army Act, which brought about major changes to Pakistan’s military leadership structure.
With a five-year tenure, the Army Chief will simultaneously hold the position of Chief of Defense Forces under the new law.
According to the law, the Army Chief’s appointment as Chief of Defence Forces will be formally announced by a new notification, and the appointment date will mark the start of the five-year term. The tenure under the new role is essentially reset by this.
The Army Chief will supervise the reorganization and unification of all Pakistani military branches in his capacity as Chief of Defense Forces. The goal is to increase military coordination and expedite command.
The National Assembly authorizes changes to the legislation governing the judiciary and the armed forces.
Azam Nazeer Tarar, the minister of law, affirmed that the five-year tenure of the chief of defense forces is explicitly defined by law. He added that the new laws eliminated the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. The Chief of Defence Forces may still be appointed by the Prime Minister.
