NIPA Tragedy: Mayor acknowledges responsibility and requests an apology from Ibrahim’s family

Following a visit to the family, the Mayor conducted a news conference in which he expressed his desire for an apology from Ibrahim’s family, refraining from assigning guilt.

Mayor Wahab expressed his apologies on behalf of the administration and the government. He also apprised the family of the particulars regarding the meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah.
The Mayor of Karachi confirmed the suspension of an engineer from the Water Corporation, a senior director of the KMC, the Assistant Commissioner, and the Mukhtiar Kar, while the suspension process for the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East and the Deputy Commissioner (DC) East is ongoing.
Murtaza Wahab stated that a precedent is being established to avert similar situations in the future, noting that the immediate response to the tragedy fell short of the anticipated standard.
He underscored the government’s desire to learn from its errors and prevent their recurrence in the future.
The Mayor acknowledged that he cannot succeed in his role if such things transpire and emphasized that the response in these cases must be exemplary to prevent harm.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has indicated that the city contains 245,000 manholes and acknowledged that the obligation for covering these manholes lies with the Karachi Water Corporation (KWC), which is also within his jurisdiction.
Subsequent to acknowledging accountability, the Mayor immediately attributed the responsibility on the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), municipal administrations, and the elected local officials.
Murtaza Wahab observed, “Although the installation of manhole covers is chiefly the duty of the Water Corporation, there is no stipulation preventing KMC or municipal administrations from installing covers as necessary.”
He emphasized that “local elected bodies bear the responsibility of ensuring that sewerage covers are installed,” asserting that it is unacceptable for any official to assert they were unable to do so.
Murtaza Wahab stated that Union Committee (UC) chairmen earlier asserted they received just Rs 0.5 million; however, the current administration has increased the allocation to Rs 1.2 million, emphasizing that they must now fulfill their responsibilities.
The Mayor of Karachi asserted that municipal administrations possess access to millions, even billions, of rupees designated particularly for resolving civic issues.
The mayor asserted, “If towns have failed to function effectively in the past, they must commence operations today,” emphasizing that persistent criticism without corresponding action will no longer be tolerated.
Wahab said that on 17 November, a truck had compromised a manhole cover, although no subsequent reports were made.
