On International Mountain Day, the PM urges everyone to work together to save the mountains and glaciers.

Pakistan is commemorating International Mountain Day in solidarity with the whole community, according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to emphasize the critical role that mountains play in preserving a healthy natural environment.
The prime minister stated in a statement on the occasion of International Mountain Day, which is held on December 11, that this year’s subject is “The Critical Role of Mountain Glaciers in Water, Food, and Livelihoods.”
He claimed that because it emphasizes the enormous opportunities and responsibilities associated with Pakistan’s abundant natural resources, the theme has particular meaning for the nation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s geographic significance by stating that the nation has been particularly fortunate by nature, since it is home to the meeting point of some of the highest mountain ranges in the world, including the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush. He emphasized that Pakistan is home to over 7,000 glaciers, including some of the biggest and most impressive glaciers in the world, like Siachen, Baltoro, Biafo, and Batura.
The Prime Minister stated, “These glaciers form the backbone of Pakistan’s water system,” adding that they supply drinking water to millions of people from the northern highlands to the coastal plains, support agricultural production, feed the Indus River Basin, and aid in the production of hydropower.
But Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif cautioned that fast glacier melting, climate change, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and environmental degradation pose major challenges to this priceless natural heritage. According to him, these issues are having a growing impact on biodiversity, food production, water security, and livelihoods that are connected to mountain ecosystems.
Through concerted actions, including as climate resilience, responsible land use, sustainable tourism, and active community participation, the prime minister asked the country to reaffirm its shared resolve to conserve these delicate ecosystems. He valued how national institutions, environmental organizations, and travel agencies helped spread the word about mountain conservation.
He emphasized the value of mountain communities, saying that local people must continue to be at the center of conservation initiatives since they are the keepers of a rich cultural and historical legacy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif specifically urged young people to serve as environmental advocates on International Mountain Day. In order to guarantee that Pakistan’s magnificent mountains and stunning glaciers be conserved for future generations in all of their natural splendor, he emphasized the necessity of teamwork.
