Before Basant, 346 dangerous structures were found in the walled city of Lahore.

Following directives from the Lahore High Court, the Walled City Lahore Authority has finished a study of hazardous and run-down buildings in the historic Walled City region ahead of the Basant festival.

346 dangerous buildings were found during the survey; 183 of these were assessed beyond repair, while 163 were found to be repairable.

Of the most hazardous buildings, 254 are still occupied and 92 have been evacuated, presenting a continuous safety risk.

Additionally, 103 of the occupied buildings are irreparable and 151 can be repaired, according to the assessment. Of the vacant buildings, 12 are repairable and 80 are scheduled for demolition.

The Walled City Authority claims that Basant kite flying is not safe on the rooftops of these dangerous structures.

Authorities have started putting up awareness banners and warning signs as part of their efforts to outlaw rooftop use.

The research suggests deploying police and paramilitary personnel, isolating dangerous areas of structures, and putting other safety measures in place in conjunction with district administration to prevent accidents during Basant.
