Pakistan asserts that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty jeopardizes other international accords.

Asim Iftikhar, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) serves as a test for the integrity of international agreements, and unilateral actions may undermine border and trade accords.
He stated that if the water treaty lacks security, then no treaty can be deemed secure.
He emphasized the instance of the Indus Waters Treaty during the Area Formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday.
The Pakistani representative asserted that the unilateral suspension of the water resources accord constitutes a perilous precedent.
Asim Iftikhar also stated that if the agreement is politicized, worldwide trust will be compromised. The Indus Waters Treaty is a worldwide problem rather than a bilateral one.
On April 23, 2025, India unilaterally declared the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) to be in abeyance.
Historically, India has utilized water as a weapon in its conflict with Pakistan. It informed Pakistan via the World Bank of its intention to suspend the pact and request amendments in 2003 following the attack on the Indian Parliament.

In accordance with the established pattern, New Delhi suspended the IWT Commission meeting following the Uri incident.
Similarly, the treaty was suspended during the latest Pahalgam tragedy.
