Twin Cities: Nullah Lai water level increases after heavy rain, low-lying regions flooded

Heavy rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have inundated low-lying neighborhoods, as the water level in Nullah Lai continues to rise, leading authorities to caution residents living along its banks.

The district government said the water level at Kattarian was 20 feet while the flow was reported at 17 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge.

Alerts were sounded in regions around Nullah Lai and inhabitants living along the river were told to evacuate immediately. Authorities claimed floodwater had penetrated into the residences in Dhok Khabba and Sadiqabad.

Rainfall statistics showed Golra had the maximum quantity of rain with 144 millimeters followed by Bokra with 132mm, Pirwadhai with 105mm and Gawalmandi with 77mm.

Heavy rain was also reported in Gujrat, Sialkot, Jhelum, Shakargarh and the neighboring districts. Several energy feeders tripped, causing disruption in the power supply to the localities concerned.
This development comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rainfall in Punjab.

The weather agency has expected rain in various parts of the country till August 21. It also warned of urban flooding in the low-lying neighborhoods of Mardan and Swabi.

The department has also warned of the threat of landslides in the hilly districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.
