PM Shehbaz Sharif adopts modifications to the Peca law to control social media

Based on the information provided, the PECA Act 2024 has authorized the creation of the Digital Rights Protection Agency (DRPA).

Following the approval of the Cabinet, the updated PECA Bill will be introduced in Parliament.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications has evaluated creating a Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA) under PECA 2016 to address dynamic digital vulnerabilities, according to sources citing the document endorsed by the Law Reforms Committee of the Cabinet.

The bill specified that the Digital Rights Protection Agency’s implementation will be handled by the Ministry of IT.

In order to punish people who break the new PECA law, the authority will look into legal infractions on social media.

It will be possible for the Digital Rights Authority to apprehend and question those responsible for infringement of digital rights.

The Ministry of IT released an SRO last week to create the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority, which is relevant to bring up here.

As per the notification, the agency will be headed by a 21-grade or higher rank officer, who must not be older than 63, in the capacity of President.

There will be additional directors, additional director generals, and other directors at the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency.

Assistant Directors and additional required positions will be formed in accordance with the agency’s makeup. For a two-year tenure, the federal government will appoint the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency’s director general.
