The Met Department cautions that the heatwave in Lahore will worsen further.

As the month of May progresses, portions of Pakistan experience a dramatic rise in temperatures often associated with June.

Temperatures in Lahore are already rising, with highs of 42 degrees Celsius forecast. The Met Department has issued a warning that the heatwave will worsen over the next 48 hours, asking residents to take steps to avoid heat-related ailments.

Medical professionals encourage residents to protect their heads when they leave their homes and to prevent unnecessary travel during high heat hours. With rising mercury, concerns about heat exhaustion and dehydration are increasing, making it critical for people to stay hydrated and seek shade whenever feasible.

Meanwhile, in Sukkur, the heatwave has pushed temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius. The Met Department predicts that temperatures will rise much higher in the coming days, possibly reaching 47 degrees Celsius.

In response to the blistering heat, locals are increasingly turning to cold drinks to cool themselves, as well as taking precautions to protect themselves from the sun.

Citizens in Sukkur are seen covering their lips and heads to avoid the flu, as the combination of high temperatures and sunlight can weaken the immune system, making people more vulnerable to illness.

The Met Department has already issued a new advisory warning of rising temperatures and the probability of rain in many areas.

According to the forecast, Balochistan’s temperature is projected to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius between May 8 and 10. Rain and thunderstorms may also be expected in locations such as Quetta and Qalat.

Temperatures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are also expected to be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above average, exacerbating the pain caused by the upcoming heatwave. Meanwhile, Punjab is preparing for warmer weather, with temperatures anticipated to rise by up to 5 degrees Celsius. Sindh, too, will see torrid weather conditions.
